However, nobody ever paid attention to the border posts, which were so numerous there. Until Jos van Emden moved to Veltwezelt from Schiedam. Before that, he himself had never seen a border post.<\/p>\n<p>The fanaticism in front of the pole is not just a joke. During training, you should always have a goal. Because simply cycling a lap can get boring. When you have a goal, you have focus. And so Jos kept looking for new border posts, which he could tick off as soon as he found them. His fascination with the history of the border was soon born. I myself grew up on the border of Germany, in Twente. Also a particularly quiet and beautiful area. Border stones always made an impression, but they are nowhere near as beautiful as the posts along the Dutch-Belgian border.<\/p>\n<p>During a Cycling Caf\u00e9 in December 2017, organised by Bjorn van de Langenberg, border posts were discussed in detail. As a fledgling idea, the idea of a tour along the border was born. A year later, Jumbo wanted to organise a similar tour to Alpe d'Huez in the Netherlands. When we were asked for ideas, we didn't have to think for long. The border region lends itself perfectly to this. The idea won the pitch. However, Jumbo turned out to focus on Formula 1 and the idea was shelved (with Max's world championship, not a bad choice by the way).<\/p>\n<p>Jos, Bjorn and I decided to organise it ourselves. Because our love for the border post continued to grow. In 2019, we launched the tours along the border. Three tours in three provinces, on road bikes all along the border. We cyclists had hardly heard of gravel at that time. Then, in spring 2020, Corona broke out. Forced to cancel everything, we sat around the table. Since we were no longer cycling from A to B in the new format, we decided to add an extra tour. The Xtreme. Because every pole deserves to be seen.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, I too had taken up graveling and we organised a small Grenspalen Gravel (test) event in the autumn of 2020 for 50 already infected border posts fanatics. Within the applicable corona measures, all four were sold out! Wonderful treks, with the Xtreme in particular being an exploration. Because no one had experience with such long treks: 25 checkpoints on the route and for the rest you get to figure it out all by yourself. It's a victory over yourself to complete the Xtreme all the way.<\/p>\n<p>After my active cycling career, I went back to basics: cycling to explore and take long beautiful trips. This is exactly what the Borders Classics are, with the Xtreme as the standard bearer. Fun comes first. The cycling party, the search for border posts and the history of the border always add extra value.<\/p>\n<p>Who knows where we will be in three years. There is still so much to explore and so many frontiers. Also boundaries that need to be overcome. A boundary is only a boundary on paper. As for an individual is a mental boundary. With the Borders Classic, we try to push boundaries and experience cycling with pleasure. If that succeeds, then our aim is successful. The winter kilometres are bearing fruit today. After all, the first classic of this triptych is about to start. And how could it be otherwise than that the kick-off takes place in Vaals. Where border post number 1 towers high above the Netherlands. Resting on its eight-sided pedestal, the cast-iron colossus waves out to the pedal knights, after which they start a rapid descent towards the foot of the Netherlands' highest mountain (322m).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"align-self: center;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:40px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single\" style=\"--awb-height:20px;--awb-amount:20px;border-color:#e8eaf0;border-top-width:0px;\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In this training ground of the pros, we climb and descend across the border into Belgium. Picturesque villages loom in the distance, vast landscapes mark the view. At least, if you have time-and breath-to enjoy it. No, you don't get the first border posts classic for free. You have to earn it. Altimeter after altimeter.<br \/>\nEven if you have the legs of speed demon Jos van Emden or Bram Tankink aka The beast from the east, it's still a matter of switching to the right mountain gear in time, getting out of your saddle when Limburg forces you to do so, breathing deeply, dosing your strength and, above all, having a great appetite to find the next cone-shaped border guard in the thicket, somewhere between the hills of the Netherlands and Belgium.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"align-self: center;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:40px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single\" style=\"--awb-height:20px;--awb-amount:20px;border-color:#e8eaf0;border-top-width:0px;\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And exactly there, in the first part of the ride where the earth folds, is today's centre of gravity, Bram Tankink knows from hours and hours of training experience. Exactly how many kilometres he has done in the Heuvelland he does not know. ''But believe me, I too have broken down at least once everywhere here,'' he reveals.<br \/>\nStill, even though he rode the snot out of his eyes, Bram was lashed by the rain, chilled by a bleak spring wind or his body protested against pushing his limits, a smile always crept onto his face when he smelt the town of Teuven.<br \/>\n''My own Cape of Good Hope,'' he smiled seductively at the idea of a well-earned cup of coffee and apple pie. After which he rode home freewheeling. Not because he had any energy left, ''No, because I was tired,'' Bram winks.<br \/>\n''After all, as a pro, you are always trying to make yourself tired. To adorn yourself in perseverance. Pushing limits. In this beautiful stretch, don't forget to stop at number 12, Jos's favourite pole: ''How firm it always stands there, it's almost a proud pole!'' He smiles.<br \/>\nWhen his workouts are tough, or his head begs for a break, Jos gets off his carbon steed and dives under the oak tree of border post 12, which guards the very tip of South Limburg. From here, you have a fine view of a patch of horizon where Beusdaal castle attracts attention.<br \/>\nJos: ,,That should actually have belonged to the Netherlands. But the Belgian who lived there wanted the valley to belong to Belgium anyway. So he shifted the borders.''<br \/>\nLike you this trip. After all, it takes strength to deflect uphill with a headwind along the river Meuse to yet another special sentinel.
